What's a cooperative?
“Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity.
“In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.”
That’s the official definition according to the International Cooperative Alliance.
And here’s what it also means to us, the five founders …
We’re simply over beer brands that we used to love being corporatised and fiddled with.
So … we increasingly like and seek out alternatives to big brewery lagers: other styles, including real craft brews. We’re fascinated with brews from micro and boutique brewers made by “artisans” (they probably hate that term but you get the drift).
We also increasingly liked the idea of an alternative to corporate and private ownership of the beer we enjoy.
We’re committed to creating an employee-owned Melbourne brewery, with and for our Froth Blowers, and to brew beer styles we enjoy. ‘Drink like you own the place’ as a US brewing coop says.
Importantly, as member owners, we believe we should build community for the common good.
To this end, we have established the 888 AOFB Cooperative – where you can own and participate in your brewery’s social responsibility efforts.
